Chapter Eight

Jake twisted left and right, then slowly bent forward to stretch his back. He rolled his neck, working out the kinks, then let out a deep breath and glanced at his watch before leaning over and studying the map.

They were getting nowhere.

And he meant that literally.

After that first night in Colorado, they had turned north, then east, then north again, and finally south. They had just crossed into Oklahoma. On their current route, they would be heading into Texas soon. After that, Jake had no idea where Alyce would decide to go.

At least the ride hadn't been boring. And even Jake had to admit they had passed through some beautiful country and seen things he wouldn't have thought to look for. If it had been him driving, in his own truck and along his own route, he would have stayed on I70 and kept at it for 15 hours each day.

If he had done that, chances were good he'd be home by now. And if not already, then certainly within the next 24 hours, if he pushed it.

Alyce was obviously rubbing off on him. He had never met anyone quite like her. And nobody he knew even came close to matching her ability to flit from one subject to another to another in such a short span of time. But she wasn't what he would call an airhead. Far from it. There was intelligence in her deep green eyes, and she wasn't like some women who preferred to hide that intelligence. She just saw things...differently. And there was no doubt in Jake's mind that she found delight in the simplest of things around.

Which was all well and good, except they were still getting nowhere fast.

He glanced back down at the map, trailing a potential route with his finger when he heard steps in the lot's gravel behind him. He turned and saw Alyce approaching, a wide smile on her face as she waved some papers at him.

Jake returned the smile, realizing that it came easier now, that it didn't quite feel so forced anymore. Without a doubt, Alyce was definitely rubbing off on him.

She stopped next to him and leaned up on her toes to give him a quick kiss, something else that was feeling more and more natural. But before he
